The Monastery of Chrissoskalitissa which is dedicated to Virgin Mary, is built on a rock in the southwestern part of the prefecture of Chania, 70 km from the city of Chania and just 5 km from the famous beach of Elafonissi.

As the tradition says, the monastery named Chrisoskalitissa because the last of the 98 steps of the monastery was gold. From the monastery you can see one of the most beautiful sunsets you will ever see.

In the village where the monastery is, which is also called Chrisoskalitissa you can find plenty of restaurants and 2 Mini markets with everything you need. On 15th of August there is a great feast with traditional food and live Cretan music, and if you are there this period you should definitely visit it.
