Voulolimni

Location

About a 70 km drive southwest of Chania, Voulolimni is tucked just 500 m northwest of the Chrysoskalitissa Monastery, also not far from the famous Elafonissi area. This remote coastal feature is perched on Crete’s rugged southwest shores, near the settlement of Chrisoskalitissa.

What is it?

Voulolimni—literally “sunk lake”—is not a typical sandy beach, but a natural saltwater lagoon or crater-like pool carved into the rocky coastline and connected to the open sea via a narrow opening. The surrounding rock walls protect the pool from wind and waves, creating calm emerald-green waters.

Setting & Scenery

Surrounded by wild, rugged cliffs, the lagoon is a sheltered oasis—serene, quiet, and rarely crowded. The water is clear, calm, and often described as greenish-turquoise. It serves as a natural harbor for small boats, though physical infrastructure is minimal.

Access & Terrain

  • Access is via a well-maintained paved road from Chania (about 1 h 20 min drive), with the final few hundred meters on a dirt track that is passable even by compact cars.
  • Facilities: There are no kiosks, sunbeds, umbrellas, or lifeguards at the site. A few trees offer shade and there’s a simple bench and table area.
  • Beach type: The bottom is mainly rocky or sandy; there’s no soft beach. Water-shoes are advised for comfort and grip.

What to Bring

  • Water, snacks, sunscreen, and especially water shoes.
  • No shade provided except a small tree-cluster area.
  • Towels or portable shade can help given minimal natural cover.

Who Will Love It

Voulolimni is perfect for solitary travelers, nature lovers, snorkelers, or anyone seeking peace away from crowded beaches. It’s ideal for a brief stop—many visitors stay 10–45 minutes—and for those staying at Viva Elafonisi or Yalos Studios (near Chrisoskalitissa), it makes a serene addition to an Elafonissi-side day.
